Paint.net

I have been using a program called 'Paint.net' it is basically a piece of soft wear like photoshop but free and less advanced, but more advanced than Microsoft Paint
as shown in this picture at can do much more than Microsoft Paint but without the technical difficulties and cost of the professional soft wear. I have been experiencing problems with the text editing tool in that if i go below a certain font size everything becomes pixilated and unreadable

First Ideas for double page spread

These are links to my first idea for a double page spread, this was done before any proper research on the type of magazine was done and i have decided that i wil have to change the layout completly to suit the kind of magazine the article is going in after looking at some real life examples from the guardian

The Presenter

The presenter in my documentary is very detached from the program, he only appears occasionally and is usually only heard narrating over footage, when he does appear it is only for a while. This aura of detachedness also frees up space on the screen for other things to occur or be shown such as the footage from a video game.
The footage is almost used to immerse the viewers into the game while having a discussion about games and how bad they are for people because they get immersed. This could be the documentary trying to show the views who may already be certain they dislike games, that they are just a bit of harmless fun or it could be trying to show the uncertain people a sort of 'look this is promoting gun violence' or it could just be a focal point for the gamers who may be watching, it is something that would be reveled further into the documentary, i was also planning to have some of the documentary presenter by a character from a game by manipulating some of the features of the game to make a character look as though they were talking to a camera - the inspiration for this has came from an Internet form of entertainment known as machinima a link to this style of entertainment can be found here

Editing Software

I have been using MAGIX Movie editor to edit all moving images for my cousework, i find it a very easy program to use and supports a large variety of file types. there is an incredibly large limit to the amount of footage you can have in one project and you can have over 32 layers of sound which makes it very easy to move around and manipulate sound files such as recordings for narrations and background noise from the video.

I have used a variety of movie editors including MAGIX windows movie maker Imovie and (insert name) and i have found magix the easiest. It is well labeld so i know what each tab does Once footage is in place, the editing tools are fairly standard. There are a couple of different ways to view the editing timeline and you can call on the library of effects and transitions to help you beef up your footage. Getting Footage into the program is very simple, just drag and drop the footage into the program and it will appear in the editing bar. same goes for sound. Exporting files is just as easy - File > Export as...
there are a variety of file types to choose from AVI MPEG being the most well known. there is one draw back i have found from using it though is that the files can be very big.

Before i put any sound that isn't from the original footage i quickly cut and edit it as much as possible in a free program called Audacity, it again like magix is very easy and straight forward to use and unlike magix the files when exported are a much smaller size

Preperation for Filming

over the half term i drew up some plans to commence filming over the weekend after half term however i have filmed enough for the first minuet of the documentary it is a short scene filmed at night of a frustrated gamer which i am going to narrate over explaining what i will be covering. it has been done so the gamer exhibits an example of the behaviour i have just talked about, for example when i mention gamer rage he will get angry.

Animatic

Today i produced an animatic to show a rough storyboard of how my documentry is going to be layed out and some of the things that i might cover it turned out very well.
See animatic here

The documentry will brreifly cover topics such as the good and bad points of online gaming
the 'side effects' of online gamming and an example of what can happen to someone who becomes way to immersied in a game.
I plan on also interveiwing a parent of a gammer, a gamer and possibly someone completly random from the online gaming univerise to do this i would have to find someone who doesnt mind being interviewd which could pose a challenge and i figure i would have to hold a dictorphone to the ear piece and hope it picks up the persons voice.
the documentry will focuse a bit on the good and bad social sides of having a 'second life' and i in doing this coursework i will more than likely learn alot about gaming which could be tied in with the other part of my media course - postmodernism

Where would this Documentry be shown and when

Because this is a documentry that would most likely be watched by parents i think i would suit a half hour slot on maybe ITV or BBC 1/2 maybe just before the news at five O'clock when people are having dinner.
As far as i can find there have been very little documentrys done like this however i did find a news report on an american program called 'Second Skin' which is a bleak outlook at the lives of the players of the online game world of warcraft the article can be found here - http://news.cnet.com/8301-13772_3-9889170-52.html
and i think it might be worth trying to see if i can find and watch the actual program somewhere to get an idea of the kind of angles the program takes and how it portrays the subjects of the people on the program
I also found a documentry/article about proffesional online gamming which i think may be worth checking out aswell link to article - http://www.olganon.org/?q=node/12674
